The Land of Enchantment is a rockhound's paradise with 122,000 miles of terrain to explore. Over 90 different specimen types may be found in New Mexico, and collecting locales vary widely, encompassing mountainous climbs, forested regions, desert plains and everything in-between, offering ample opportunity to enjoy the state's noted scenery.
The completely revised edition contains over 100 collecting sites, including 25 new locations. All locations have been updated to include GPS coordinates, necessary tools, road conditions, driving directions and location map. Color photos of the wide range of rocks, minerals and fossils found in the state will help you identify your finds.

Extremely outdated. Check the original copyright dates (70's). Even the updates that were made (2010 in the book I received) are either wrong or no longer valid. The map and general guide for west of Albuquerque is mostly wrong or no longer valid because it's all tribal land now.
For locations north of Albuquerque, most of that territory is managed by Forest Service and you're no longer able to rockhound at the locations I tried.
For Southwest of central New Mexico, the maps are a bit off, but I eventually found the locations (and definitely 4WD recommended as the roads have changed over the decades).
Basically I just use this book as a general guide and then hope online to the Public Lands website to see if I can still LEGALLY rock-collect in those areas.

Gem Trails of New Mexico James R Mitchell 9781889786483 Books Reviews
Some of info. needs to be updated. Only went to few locations, but the location not near what was in the book, namely Willard Halite!
The lakes are very far from the road. Other sites much better. Check them out a little better before you go!!!
Great book. Pretty accurate some areas were tough to find but all in all very happy.
I have used Gem Trails for years. Great book
Having a great time following some of the southern trails! I find something beautiful and new everyday. Today it's Onyx...and lots of it! Awesome informative book!
Excellent resouce but would like more color photos and organized into regions.
If you like to rock hound in New Mexico, use this as a guide. This is a good book, just understand it may not take you to the exact spot but use it as a guide to the general area, then explore.
The directions we tried were either wrong or too vague to follow. Finally it became a joke to guess how far off the beaten path the directions would take us with no results at the end. The only useful pieces of information from this book were the directions to rock shops in NM.
